Starting on May 23, 2025, the Film Museum in Łódź will welcome visitors to the exhibition The Moomins: The Door Is Always Open. The title is also the official slogan of the Moomin80 anniversary celebrations. The Moomins are turning 80, counting from the first published story in which they appeared.
The Film Museum has a special reason for celebrating the Moomins’ 80th anniversary. Between 1977 and 1982, the Se-Ma-For Film Studio in Łódź produced the animated series The Moomins based on Tove Jansson’s books.
The success of Tove Jansson’s books in Poland paved the way for the animated series. The first Polish translation of a Moomin book, Finn Family Moomintroll (the third book in the series), was published in 1964.
In the 1970s and 1980s, some volumes were published in extraordinary print runs of 50,000 copies each.
The pilot episode of the Polish animated adaptation, Spring in the Valley, was completed in 1977. Tove Jansson attached great importance to the artistic quality of the films. Scripts for new episodes of The Moomin Stories, written at Se-Ma-For, were sent by post to Helsinki. Tove and Lars Jansson would make revisions and send back their feedback.

The Moomins and Tove Jansson
The Moomins and the Great Flood was originally published in Finland in 1945. The first little book gave rise to a series of nine installments; the last one, Moominvalley in November, appeared in 1970. The books are known worldwide and have been translated into over 60 languages.
The values cherished in Moominvalley are friendship, family, love, kindness, freedom, tolerance, and a love of adventure.
